Part of the problem in finding drugs which may be effective for dementia is that our ideas about what constitutes dementia have been undergoing radical change in recent years. It had been traditional to distinguish between Alzheimer's dementia, or senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type (SDAT) and multi-infarct dementia (MID), which is theoretically caused by small strokes which insidiously pick off brain tissue to the point where an individual's cognitive function is compromised.

It was originally thought that MID accounted for 60%+ of the dementias. Accordingly, early attempts to treat the dementias concentrated on the multi-infarct dementias. The initial hypothesis was that these multiple small strokes were being caused by a process of hardening of the arteries, sometimes called arteriosclerosis and sometimes atherosclerosis (although these terms refer to two quite different disorders) which impaired blood supply to the brain. The logical treatment, therefore, for this condition was to attempt to dilate blood vessels. This led to the use of a wide number of vasodilating drugs such as hydralazine.

It is quite rare now for such drugs to be used for this purpose. Arguably, if anything, such treatment may have made the condition somewhat worse in that a potential effect of vasodilators is the reduction of blood pressure and reducing blood pressure would mean that the brain would be less perfused with blood, as one of the functions of blood pressure in the first instance is to provide the propulsive force to send blood up against the force of gravity to perfuse the brain.

Stage 2

More recent attempts to treat the dementias have proceeded on the basis that Alzheimer's dementia is the commonest form of dementia. For many years, the term Alzheimer's dementia was reserved for dementias that came on before the age of 65 (for this reason it was also called persenile dementia), which were not obviously caused by strokes. It was conceded that there was another dementia that was like Alzheimer's dementia, which appeared to come on after the age of 65 but this was thought to be less common. Distinctions on the basis of age have now collapsed and both dementias of the Alzheimer type are now called senile dementia of the Alzheimer type. The amalgamation of these two groups led to an awareness that Alzheimer's-type dementia is the commonest form. The primary therapeutic focus in the field, therefore, has been on an attempt to reverse the deficits which are supposed to be present in SDAT.

In particular, it has been held that in Alzheimer's, there is a dysfunction of cholinergic pathways in the brain, for which there are both historical and clinical reason. Historically, when early work in psychopharmacology began, there were only four known neurotransmitters - noradrenaline, 5-HT, dopamine and acetylcholine (ACh). Noradrenaline quickly became the neurotransmitter involved in depression and mood disorders. Dopamine was known to be involved in Parkinson's disease, and, when it became clear that neuroleptics acted on it, schizophrenia, after which the psychoses in general came to be seen as disorders of dopamine neurotransmission. For the most part, 5-HT was associated with either depression or anxiety. This left ACh without a function. It seemed convenient to parcel it out to the dementias.

There was, in addition, some clinical evidence in favour of an association between the cholinergic system and dementia. Part of the reason for this claim can be seen in a number of the chapters of this blog, in which drugs with anticholinergic effects have been noted as potentially causing amnesia or confusion (see The Management of Side Effects & Side Effects of Antidepressants articles).

Stage 3

In the last 5 years, a number of other dementias have been described. A distinction has been drawn between cortical and subcortical dementias. The cortex of the brain is the area responsible for higher cognitive functions, such as speaking, reading, planning and executing actions, etc In the cortical dementias, memory is usually the function most noticeably affected but those who are affected also have problems with planning even simple functions such as dressing and they typically cannot read, draw or execute any complex tasks. Alzheimer's and MID are cortical dementias. There are also subcortical parts to the brain which are common to humans and other mammals. They involve a number of what are termed midbrain and brainstem structures.

3 Leg Workouts You Must Implement Into Your Training

Having great legs is a characteristic that is desired for both men and women. There are many people who spend hours in the gym working their lower bodies with various exercises for legs.

However, you shouldn't have a weight lifting workout that exceeds 45 minutes. When you do, the positive achievements seem to diminish. The point is once you pass over this threshold, your workout is no longer beneficial and it's all for show. This is why experts encourage you to stick to a 45 minute frame over a 3-day period.

One of the most important parts when working out is the post regimen. We recommend eating within 90 minutes of rigorously working your muscles. It will allow your body to recover much better.

Waiting longer will help you lose muscle as opposed to gaining it. Today we've put together a few effective methods for your legs.

Squats- One of the most common parts to leg workouts is squats. They offer several benefits to the hamstrings, quads, and buttocks. The truth is you won't find many exercises that guarantee the types of leg muscle results as leg squats.

In order to do this you just have to stand with your feet apart, knees slightly bent, abs tight, and your shoulders down and relaxed. It's also important to keep your head and neck straight to provide yourself with a natural alignment.

Your knees will bend until you reach a 90 degree angle. Don't lean forward though because if you put too much pressure up front, there is more of a risk for injuries to take place. The knee joints and lower back can easily be hurt in the process.

Just pretend like there is a stool behind you to sit on. You can hold the position for a one count, and then slowly raise up. The knees should remain within the range of your toes at all times. When you have the technique down, just continue the process until your rep goals are met.

Romanian Deadlift. If you want to target the hamstrings and glutes more effectively then a great leg exercise is the romanian deadlift. To execute this exercise choose either a barbell or set of dumbells and hold with a little wider than shoulder grip. Make sure the knees are slightly bent and push back your hips maintaining a straight back. With a straight back throughout the movement use your hips to raise the bar. The movement should not be fast but controlled. The arms remain straight.

As you stand up fully then lower the bar again pushing back the hips and bending the knees.Take a deep breath at the start of the movement and keep your chest up. Hold your breath as you lower bar to just below the knee and exhale as you bring the bar upwards. Always seek professional advice if you need assistance with this exercise and remember to start with light weights.

Calve Raises. In doing these exercises you will need to ensure that your feet are spread apart (as wide as your shoulder width) and your hands placed on your hips. With your head and neck erect, ensure that your posture is correct whilst performing the exercise. Slowly raise your heels until you feel a real squeeze in your calf muscles. Hold for a count of one, squeeze, and then slowly lower. Continue the process until your intended reps is reached.

You can see that even simple exercises can be complex. However, if you can simply pay attention to your movements, the results will be more noticeable. Oh, and no matter what one you use, we recommend eating before working out. Then of course you should think about engaging in sufficient resistance training and rest.

Third, you have to decide how much time to take. This is significant because both people may not have the same amount of time off. For example: Have either of you just started a new job recently? As we know, in most cases we have to be on a new job for at least 6 months before taking a vacation.

Once you have these details ironed out you need to compare vacation styles. Some want nothing more than to relax while on vacation. After all, they reason, that's what a vacation is for; relaxing. Others want to hit every single site and tourist attraction within a hundred mile radius.

This total contrast in vacation styles can clash and make for a frustrating trip. It may important to compromise to make sure that each individual can get some of the things they are important to them. It is not necessary to spend every second with a specific mission in mind, nor is it productive to spend all your time relaxing.

Take turns doing the things you each enjoy; you'll find your trip mutually satisfying. Your first trip together is supposed to be a fun time of getting to learn more about each other. The best way to do that is to get the issues out of the way before you board the plane.

Moreover, taking a huge amount of one amino acid can block the absorption of another.

2. L-carnitine tablets. This one is a no brainer. Carnitine is not essential. In other words, your body produces all the carnitine it needs for fat burning. So do not fall for the faulty assumption that extra carnitine will get more fat into your cells for burning.

3. Chromium picolinate. Some initial studies showed that this supplement was effective for reducing waist lines. However, since then, this supplement has failed to live up to expectations. And some research has shown it to be toxic. I recommend saving your money and buying some healthy food instead.

4. Powders. By powders I mean meal replacements. The term is very contradictory. After all, a packet of powder cannot match up to a fully balanced meal loaded with nutrients. Use meal replacements in only the most extreme situations. And even bars would be a better option here.

The gyrations supplement companies will go through to push their products are endless. And more often than not, it can be very hard for the average consumer to sift through all the hype without an advanced degree in exercise science. So stick to natural food and avoid all the enticing claims!
