Help Children Deal with Panic Attack in Darkness

By Garyl Hany

We usually dream that our children will have great imaginative mind, thinking that it will make the children more creative in life. However, this dream of ours sometimes brings consequences. Due to the imaginative mind of our children, they may experience constant fear. The fear may be associated from the things they saw on the media. Since they are children, they will have the tendency to confuse reality from fantasy. Mostly the fantasy is not very pleasing which leads to anxiety and panic attacks that hunt them nightly.

At night, panic attack in children is common. This seems natural because some children are afraid of the dark. More often, panic attack will hit the child after he woke up from a nightmare. While the child is having a nightmare, his stress level is already fluctuating significantly. When he woke up and found himself alone in the darkness, he will burst into tears. This means that the child is having a panic attack.

If the child is still too vulnerable to nightmares, it is wise that the child shouldn't sleep alone. If possible, let the child decides if he really wanted his own room. And if the darkness can trick the brain of a child that there is insufficient air, turn the lights on. This way the child feels safer and more secured.

Also, food consumption of a child might affect the way his brain function. Consuming insufficient amount of nutrients and eating the wrong foods might disrupt the functioning of his mind. So, let the child eat healthy and nutritious foods. And before he sleeps, don't give him something heavy for the stomach to digest.

Furthermore, we shouldn't contribute to our children's anxiety. It is never a good idea to threaten the children with monster in the closet and under the bed.

If your child sleeping habit is already affected, it is highly recommended that you let someone check him out. Otherwise, panic attack will hunt your child until he gets old. He won't get over it and his fear will control his life forever unless treated.
