Do You Know What The Most Common Ovarian Cyst Symptoms Are?

By Amanda Clark

An ovarian cyst is similar to a round sac filled with clear liquid, surrounded by a very thin wall, within an ovary. When an ovarian cyst doesn't release ovules, it continues to grow, becoming larger than normal (functional ovarian cyst). Let's see what the most common ovarian cyst symptoms are:

There are many types of ovarian cysts. Functional ovarian cysts are asymptomatic in most cases. It's good to know that this gynecological problem goes by itself without treatment. Since most ovarian cysts are benign, you shouldn't be worried about. The most common symptoms include stomach or pelvic pain caused by the rapid growth and stretching of the cyst.

If you have a functional ovarian cyst, you may present lower abdominal pain, irregular menstrual periods, and sharp pain after intercourse or exhausting exercise, long-term pelvic pain during menstrual period, vaginal bleeding, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. In some cases, ovarian cysts can cause infertility. Also, it's possible to gain weight because of this problem.

Sometimes, the pain is accompanied by fever, dizziness, cold sweat and weakness. If you have these symptoms, consult a doctor as soon as possible, because you might have a shock.

Most of these symptoms can indicate a different disease or condition, such as ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cancer, endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease. Appendicitis and diverticulitis have similar symptoms.

Some women may develop other types of ovarian cysts, which are less common: dermoid cysts, hemorrhagic cysts, follicular cysts, endometrioid cysts, corpus luteum cysts, etc.

Although functional cysts have no harmful effects on your health, it's advisable to consult the gynecologist immediately after you notice the first signs that may indicate a problem. Ovarian cyst symptoms mustn't be neglected.
