The Secret To Stop Being "Tired And Wired"

By Gerry Geneva

Because of our increasingly hectic and demanding lives, many of us find ourselves completely exhausted all the time. Faced with the challenges of a life in our fast paced world, we see seemly devastating stresses coming from a variety of different sources. It seems to me that we are facing a vastly different set of challenges than our parents and grandparents faced.

Our generation in particular is facing increased difficulties. That's not to say that those that came before us faced only good times. But things are quite a bit different, and because of these different challenges, we need a different set of skills to face them.

Just think about what technology allows us to accomplish, but at the same time, the added level of stress things like the internet, email, cell phones. Add that to the already challenging demands of kids, school activities, bills, choirs, work, etc. In today's world a different set of management skills are required that our parents even had to think about.

The first tip to end the tired and wired feeling is to learn to work in smaller chunks of time. We are too distracted. If you get out of the "grey zone" of work, you can stop the zombie like state of just getting through the day. Let me explain.

The typical workday may start at 9:00 in the morning and end at 5:00. Often phone calls and emails start the day earlier and end the workday later. Instead of sitting down at your desk and doing a marathon through the day, you might consider breaking your day into small chucks of 90-120 minute blocks of time. Focus for 90 minutes then take a 10-15 minute break where you completely disengage. You will start to feel your energy levels surge.

The second tip is to learn to develop rituals, especially rituals to get you out of one state and into another. We unconsciously develop rituals anyways, but it is important that you learn to deliberately develop the types that will serve and help you. Think of an Olympic sprinter getting ready for their event, or a comedian backstage getting ready to perform a show. What you don't see is that these same performers have rituals to get them out of 'high performance' state as well as rituals to get them into state.

Just like it's critically important to take the time to get into state, its also important to get out of state. You can't stay in high performance state for too long or you burn out. To translate that into our lives, think of how you get in and out of state. Do you even get out of state ever? Are you bringing your laptop to bed or talking business in the bedroom? We need to learn to unplug.

If you take a moment and develop a nighttime ritual, a deliberate set of steps to instruct your body that it is now time for bed, you will notice an immediate difference. Eat a snack, read a book, listen to some soothing music, dim the lights, turn off the TV. You need to instruct your body that it is now time for rest.

If you have a child you know what happens when they miss the window of opportunity for an afternoon nap. They likely become very cranky, hard to manage, and miserable. It becomes harder and harder to get them to sleep.

As adults we face the same thing. Often we push ourselves too hard, to far past our "window of opportunity" for rest. We then complain that we have sleep problems, or that we aren't getting rejuvenated from our rest. However, the challenge in most cases is not "sleep problems", its that we don't know how to listen to our bodies and get to sleep.

Many people are suffering from the debilitating symptoms of overworked adrenal glands leading to what's called adrenal fatigue. This occurs when we the adrenal glands are worn out, exhausted, and they stop functioning properly. What happens to you? You feel tired and wired all the time.

If you find that you are very tired all the time and even a vacation or retreat is not recharging your system, you may be suffering from adrenal fatigue. The good news is that you can fully recover from it. And you don't need expensive medicines or treatments; you just need to learn to better manage your energy. It's definitely something you won't regret.
