Benefiting Prostate Nutrition by Adding Prostate Supplements

By James E. Bailey

The prostate is a male sex gland that is about walnut-sized and resides near the bladder. The function of this gland is to store and secrete the alkaline fluid in semen to prolong the life of sperm traveling is the highly acidic environment of a woman's vagina. Without the prostate's function, pregnancy would be next to impossible.

Since the prostate is primarily a gland, it is susceptible to infections and disease. So, men are often advised to have regular prostate exams and take prostate supplements to aid their health and to provide proper prostate nutrition.

There are now many options in the health supplement market - some really work, while others are simply vitamin additives. This pertains to prostate supplements as well. Men are seeking to keep their prostates healthy since more and more of them are being diagnosed with prostate cancer. They need to make sure to carefully read the labels of supplements to make sure they have the ingredients to keep their prostates healthy.

Saw palmetto and lycopene are the two main ingredients that are necessary in a good prostate supplement. Lycopene works as an anti-oxidant; it is a natural carotenoid that is located in vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes. It's been proven in studies that a diet rich in lycopene can lessen the risk of prostate cancer.

Saw palmetto is an herb that is native to the southeastern United States. It's commonly known as an American dwarf palm or cabbage palm. The Seminole tribe of Florida often used its fruit medically. While its full effects have not been substantiated by studies, some reports have indicated that saw palmetto has anti-inflammatory agents that are helpful for an enlarged prostate. It's also reported that saw palmetto can block the conversion of testosterone into the sub-hormone that has been known to increase the growth of cancerous cells in the prostate.

There are many reasons to learn more about health care for the prostate even though no "anti-cancer" supplements exist that will stop a man from ever developing prostate cancer. Early detection of prostate cancer through blood testing and regular exams can itself be a useful tool in preventing it.

There will always be a myriad of supplements that claim to benefit your health, but many of them simply do not contain enough of the active herbal ingredients they need to really be effective. The only way that you're going to be sure you've done everything you can for your prostate is to continue consulting your physician.
