Latest Survey Shows We're Not Getting Enough Sleep

By Glenn Beardsley

Of course we all are aware that sleeping is not only necessary for refreshing our mind, but is critical to our physical health as well. Which is why the latest survey (Sleep In America) carried out by the National Sleep Foundation might cause you to be surprised.

The annual poll calculates that American citizens get an average of just 6.7 hours of sleep per night during weekdays. Also, over the last 10 years, an increasing number of us are getting under 6 hours sleep per night. Those who get at least 8 hours a night is going down as well.

In our hyper busy, open all hours world, it's not really surprising that we sleep about an hour and a half less per night than our ancestors did little more than a hundred years ago.

There are many distractions and forms of entertainment that no generation have had before. So, it's not hard to see why sleep has moved down our priority list. The ready accessibility of technology like the internet, cell phones, Blackberries and other gadgets allow us to be distracted when we should be sleeping, and to do things at any time, anywhere.

In another piece of research, the American Psychological Association, reported that 52% of 7,000 respondents lost sleep at night due to stress.

Of course failing to get sufficient sleep leaves most of us experiencing irritability and fatigue, as well as leading to impaired work performance, lackluster thinking skills and questionable judgment.

Nearly anyone can improve the quality of their sleep thoughby setting up a regular sleeping routine. Get yourself to bed and get up at the same time every day, this also applies to days off, vacations and holidays.

You should keep your sleeping space is restful, peacful and at a comfortable temperature. Do this and there's a higher likelihood of getting the 8 sleep hours that you need.
