Massage Therapy Degree Program

By Bart Icles

Massage Therapy is rapidly gaining popularity which has never been seen before in the past with other courses in the medical field. It is also fast being viewed and practiced in all communities as a viable means of maintaining optimal health. Massage Therapists and practitioners work as part of a team of health care professionals to ensure health, prevent and alleviate disease and injury, and restore maximum normal physical functionality when health is compromised.

A degree in Massage Therapy is now considered the newest and most promising career in the medical field of natural healing today. Any student or other career person wishing to become a certified massage therapist will find it easier to enroll in the course as more and more colleges and universities are including it in their curriculum. Anyone who wants to improve their chances for employment in this type of medical practice, for personal gain or for service to the community, and working in a hospital or clinic should do so while demand for it is still high.

Those who are keen on taking up the course should carefully look at their school/s of choice with regards to enrollment requirements, tuition, board certification, state licensing and assistance programs, and other important matters, as these may greatly vary and depend from school to school. The course outline should not be taken lightly by any probable candidate, as it filled with complex and difficult subjects of the medical field to business management such as human anatomy and business ethics.

Some other subjects that are incorporated in a massage therapist course, besides anatomy and business ethics, are as follows: Human Relations, Pathology, Physiology, Treatments, Hydrotherapy, Kinesiology and Remedial Exercise, Nutrition and Public Health, Theory and Technique, Clinic and Outreach. The program's course normally takes up to 20,000 plus hours to complete, depending on the school or universities plotted course outline. Students will have to participate in community outreach programs in various clinics of their state to enable them to gain a first-hand experience in the application of massage therapy in different conditions and settings, to develop fast and viable reflexes from real-life scenarios.

Massage is an ancient form of healing that is both considered an art and a science. It requires a harmonious balance of academic and technical knowledge, sensitivity, clinical skills, manual dexterity and awareness. Almost all individuals are gifted with the innate ability to touch another with care and confidence. Yet it also demands from one to have the sincere desire and drive to help those in need of healing, and also one who can commit his time, energy, effort and determination for the intense training process to become a true believer and practitioner of this ancient practice.
