Should You As A Parent Be Worried About The Swine Flu?

By Mirak Inariv

It's all over the news and turning up in cases worldwide : swine influenza. But quite how much should folks be concerned about this latest mutation of influenza, that has health setups and people around the globe concerned?

"Swine flu" relates to any flu virus endemic in pigs, but the strain behind this year's world outbreak is a mutation, which allows animal to human, and human-to-human, transmission - a big worry if the virus develops quicker than doctors and scientists can keep up.

With lots more cases on the way, swine influenza is causing widespread concern and doubt, as even expert epidemiologists admit there's little knowing whether the outbreak will become worse into a global pandemic, or finish up as no worse than the standard influenza. Practically chatting, swine influenza isn't all that different from seasonal flu in symptoms and treatment. "

A lot of people are hysterical when they heard the words 'swine flu'," asserts Wayne Yankus, MD, a community pediatrician in New Jersey. Yankus also discussed that the virus carries some unique qualities that could be cause for concern down the line.

"The horrifying thing for me as a pediatrician is that we are beginning to see flu mutate at a different time of the year than is normal, as well as influencing an age group that is not typically at risk," particularly, teenagers and adults, vs. the typically vulnerable populations of young children and the old.

This, and the indisputable fact this flu appeared in the spring, at the standard conclusion of influenza season, shares discomfiting likenesses with the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic which rubbed out out uncountable millions of sometimes healthy young children and youths. Dr Joe Bresee, of the Centers for Sickness Control and Prevention ( CDC ) Influenza Division, claims the prospects of swine influenza in people are the same as the prospects of regular human flu and include: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue.

Like seasonal influenza, swine flu infection can be fatal and it's best to be looking out for these and other symptoms in young children. According to the CDC, caution signs that young children especially need critical medical aid include : fast respiring or problems breathing, bluish skin color, not awakening or not interacting, fever with a rash, flu-like symptoms.
