Linking Asbestos Exposure to Cancer Mesothelioma - Cancer Mesothelioma

By Veronica Carrillo

Exposure to asbestos can cause a rare form of cancer called mesothelioma. Asbestos is found in workplaces where industries use it during manufacturing processes. Every year, thousands of people are affected by it all over the world. It is difficult to diagnose this cancer, this is why by the time diagnosis is discovered, the cancer has progressed to an advanced stage. Treatments are limited once this happens and treating this cancer can be costly. There are legal experts that specialize in mesothelioma law and they can help individuals get the help they need to pay for these expenses.

As we all know, the tobacco smoke is one of the carcinogens that causes the cancer, especially the lung cancer. The properties of tobacco smoke destruct lung tissue by inflammation and consequently causing the cancer of lung. Cigarette smokers have lower levels of lung function than nonsmoker, and quitting smoking greatly reduces cumulative risk for developing lung cancer.

In reports, about 70 to 80% of mesothelioma cases are due to the exposure to asbestos. What is unfortunate is symptoms may take up to 50 years to appear and it may be too late. Under the mesothelioma law, a person can be protected if asbestos is the cause of the disease.

While active smoking has been shown to be the main cause of lung cancer, second-hand smoke contains the same carcinogens even worse that are inhaled by smokers. Unfortunately, the second-hand smoke affects the nonsmokers too. Reactive oxygen species is one of the environmental chemicals that toxic to our body. During passive smoking, the body is attacked by an excess of free radicals which inducing oxidative stress. Therefore, even a short period of passive smoking will break down serum antioxidant defence of the nonsmoker.

Millions of people have worked in industries using asbestos before the hazards of it was discovered. Asbestos was used in during many manufacturing of products. Some factories that used asbestos include auto parts, mining, roofing shingles, and insulation, among others. Since the symptoms take so long to appear, options become limited for victims. Treatments include surgery, radiation treatment, and chemotherapy. Doctors will consider what stage the cancer is in, and the location of it before making decision for treatment.

Thus, if you suspect that you have asbestos in your home, you should not disturb the material so that you do not accidentally release the fibers into the air. You must get a professional asbestos removal service to take the material out, and you should not remodel your home if you believe that asbestos may be present. For some people who are especially sensitive to this material, a single exposure can result in an asbestos-related disease.
